Fishing in the Shadow of Boston.

Twenty-five Years and Counting!

After recently renewing my Coast Guard license, I realized I’ve been guiding for 25 years. It is hard to believe how things have changed. Inefficient two-stroke outboards have been replaced by ultra modern fuel-injected four-stroke engines.
Gone is Loran C, replaced by DGPS. State-of-the-art materials are used in fishing rods, lines, and even lures.

Along the way, I have learned a lot about fish, fishing, and life in general. I discovered a long time ago that fish are as much of a creature of habit as I am. For the most part, technology is a good thing. And twenty-five years of on-the-water friendships can never be replaced.

I’ve also learned that a supporting “first mate” is a blessing. Mary and I have been married for 40 years and are now proud grandparents of two grand kids. I hope to pass on the tradition of the “high seas” to them.

What’s on Tap for 2012?

Last season provided great fishing for veterans and new comers of Draggin’ Fly Charters. Catch numbers per trip for the year were down slightly from previous years…but sizes were BIGGER! Stripers between 28 inches to 36 inches were very common. And many clients caught trophy bass over 40 inches throughout the season.

I am looking forward to another great striped bass season. While bluefish were a challenge last year, we were able to find some really big fish. Boston’s bountiful herring stocks will attract plenty of striped bass by mid-May. Once mackerel get in the mix, look for some incredible fishing.

Be Sure to Book Early

Draggin’ Fly Charters has maintained rates since 2008, while inflation has driven up prices for tackle, boat maintenance, and insurance each season. Fuel prices are predicted to reach over $4.00 per gallon. We will be forced to increase our 2012 rates by $25.00 per trip. However, book by April 30, 2012 and we will discount the rate by this increase.
